WSS versus MOSS 2007
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is a free download available from Microsoft. This version allows you to build SharePoint solutions - usually on a single server.
It is relatively simple to install and to setup and get a working SharePoint implementation within a couple of days.
This is good enough for a smal SharePoint site and is useful for providing proof-of-concept prototypes. However it has limited functionality and restrictions on data storage (4GB limit for SQL Express).
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) comes in two versions - standard and enterprise. You gain significant extra functionality in this paid for version. You would certainly use a small to medium server farm to host such a solution.
